When Rodin sculpted The Thinker, when Michelangelo sculpted David, and when, much more recently, Bill Reid sculpted the Spirit of Haida Gwaii, each artist looked to the world around him to find inspiration and form for his creation. Then each looked within himself to bring meaning and passion to his art.

Like a sculptor's creative method, life is also a constant process of balancing what we know about the world around us with the drive and passion we find within ourselves. Each time we make a decision we become like sculptors, shaping yet another piece of our lives and bringing form to our own futures.

As you become a sculptor and begin to shape your life, remember that this is a journey of learning. Bill Reid constructed several models before ever completing the Spirit of Haida Gwaii, and that process changed the final outcome of the piece. You will also change as you have new experiences. Just as Reid added, subtracted and altered figures in his sculpture, you may adjust the goals you set according to the person you become in the process. Don't be afraid to change your plans as you change and grow. The sculpture of David may be carved in stone, but your future is not.
